Build your relationships: no matter what size of organisation you are, invest time in engaging directly with funders. Use opportunities like roadshows to introduce yourself, and if trusts and foundations offer the opportunity for a phone discussion, always take them up on it. If the funding situation doesn’t allow you to talk directly to the funder (eg. because of a formal tender), think about how else you can influence (eg. through press articles they might read).
